ACTIVITY: Create Script & Final Storyboard (Benchmark 7)

Project: California, Who Are You?

SUMMARY

Goals

Details

Duration: 120+ minutes

Assessments: Student discussions, Student writing

Materials: Internet access, 1-2 computers per group, printer

Description

Students are essentially creating a plan for how they will create their movie. One half of the group is working on writing a script (according to the guidelines) that closely mirror the format of a traditional English Language Arts essay. The other half of the group is finding & creating images and short film clips from the Internet that go along with and illustrate the script. Then, students will bring these two pieces together to create a paper outline of the movie by putting the images or stills of the film clips in order of how they will appear in the movie with the words that will be recorded while that image is displayed. This is a key aspect of the movie creation - if students cut corners on the final storyboard, the movie will suffer.

REFLECTIONS & COMMENTS

Author Reflections

This process was arduous, because students did not whole-heartedly agree with doing this assignment. They were not bought into how helpful it would be for them later, especially if there was a student from their groups absent. While creating the film, students used the storyboards closely and were ultimately glad that they created them, but if I had to do this project again, I would emphasize how critical having this solid plan will be when it comes to making the movie. Also, I would encourage other teachers from other classes to do a similar process so that it is normalized.
