Duration: 120+ minutes

Description

Although students may choose to work alone on their art piece, this is a group project: each block (or class) is the group. As a class, the retelling must cover all the highlights of The Odyssey. If several individuals or small groups want the same part of The Odyssey, then not everyone will get it.

For this reason, students must submit a written proposal and make a formal presentation for their artistic retelling. The class will decide on who gets what parts based on the strength of the proposal.

In the proposal (which should run about two pages), students should identify the part of The Odyssey they would like to retell, discuss their means of artistic expression, and explain how their art piece will communicate the meaning of Homer's epic. In addition, they must identify two other parts of The Odyssey they would be willing to do if they don't get their first choice.

Allow at least a couple class sessions for the presentations of proposals. This is a perfect opportunity to practice Envision Schools public speaking standards.

Proposals can begin as soon as the class finishes reading The Odyssey.
