Description

Students were provided with the following prompt after receiving their assessed essays:

The following questions are designed to help you reflect on your essay writing process in an effort to prepare for the revision of this essay. We will hold onto the typed draft of this essay along with this reflection and will return both to you later in your high school career in an attempt to revise your work for your required graduation portfolio.

This is a MANDATORY reflection and it should be resubmitted with your essay and rubric attached.

1. What was most important to you about the work you did in preparing for and writing this essay (personally and academically)? Why?

2. What did you learn about yourself as a learner? As a thinker? As a writer? As a researcher? Why are these things important?

3. What did you do well on in writing this essay? How do you know?

4. What do you feel you didn't do well on in writing this essay? What will you change next time? Why?

5. Based on the suggestions of your reviewer paired with your own reflection, explain (with specific details) how your essay needs to be improved in the following areas:
a. Knowledge
b. Communication Skills: Evidence
c. Communication Skills: Analysis
d. Habits of Work
e. Habits of Mind

Sample questions to help you with #5 include:
? Do you feel that you stated a strong, original thesis and were able to back it up with relevant evidence? How?
? Were you able to offer strong analysis (explain why your evidence applied)?
? Did you provide an engaging and creative introduction and conclusion?
? Did you stick to your original point throughout the essay?
? Did you proofread your work? Did you have another adult read over your work? What did you learn from this experience?

REFLECTIONS & COMMENTS

Author Reflections

This was an invaluable resource. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to work with students through a necessary revision process, but these reflections asked the student to look critically at their work, and provide them with a launching point to revise in the future.
