HOLOCAUST EXHIBITION WORKSHOPS

Students were asked to choose the project/workshop that most interested them., by ranking their top 3 seletions. Exhibition workshops were held from Monday, May 1 – Wednesday, May 17. ( Note that all projects will include common elements such as a written reflection piece, public speaking, research, and creative expression even if not stated in the descriptions below.)

--Portraits and Comics: Visual Arts Exhibition Project
Join other artists in creating an exciting and unique exhibition project. We will do a combination of portraiture and comics to interweave stories from a variety of people involved in the Holocaust. Each student will be an "expert" on at least one person that they will portray through a portrait in a medium of their choice and will be responsible for telling their story through words and pictures. If time allows we will lead the entire school in creating a memorial project that will be displayed throughout the building.

--Teatro en español
The exhibition project will be a play based on the research we have done on Latin American politics and will consist of interrelated vignettes, which will be written and performed by the students. The play will be in Spanish, but there will be narration in English. In addition to writing and acting in the play, the students will create sets and choose music and other effects for the production. The details of the play are for the students to decide, but the general structure will be a little bit like the movie Crash, beginning at the end and working its way backwards.

--The Radio Project: Does History Repeat Itself?
Have you ever been interested in being on the radio? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to express your own opinions and be heard. Through writing and recording an audio commentary, you will answer the question: Does History Repeat Itself? You will examine the roles of upstanders and bystanders during the Holocaust and relate them to another historical or present day event. You may choose to write about current events such as Civil War in Central America, Genocide in Rwanda and Darfur (Sudan), Immigration Issues, Sweatshops, Police Brutality, or another issue that interests you. You will use evidence (from Night, World History, and Spanish or Academic Literacy classes) to support your perspective on this question. In addition, you will create a unique visual art piece using your silhouette and quotes from your commentary. Your recordings and visual pieces will be broadcast and displayed on the night of the exhibition. You might even have the opportunity to have your commentary aired on a local radio station! Finally, you will practice for a "meet the artist" talk and question and answer session in preparation for exhibition night.

--The Holocaust Filmmaking Project
Filmmakers! In this unique workshop, students will create a multimedia film that will chronicle the experience of individuals who were affected by the Holocaust. In addition, we will use the poems modeled after Sherman Alexie and created in Language Arts and put it to music, and images.

--A Correspondence between History and My-Story
Attention Writers and Artists! Bear Witness! Speak Truth!
Build upon and deepen the work you've already begun in your scrapbook about the Holocaust. Continue your Search for Meaning project by creating a truly interactive experience for readers and visitors to the museum. Share your 'testimony' and tell The Story of your understandings by producing a book or 'chest' creatively filled with a collection of reflective and creative writing, artwork and artifacts that your audience can touch and feel. There are many possibilities that include: writing and placing letters in envelopes, burying hidden messages, creating a series of postcards sent between the past and the present, creating montages of words and images, etc. This interactive correspondence can use both digital (using keynote, web design and/or flash) and paper/artistic resources.

--How do we remember?
Are you passionate about standing up for what you believe? Do you feel like sometimes some parts of history are ignored? Have you ever been interested in architecture? This exhibition project is perfect for you! We will be taking on the roles of architects and designers to create, design, and build a memorial inspired by the Holocaust. The memorial can be anything that pays tribute to an important event in history, your values, or something that happened in your neighborhood. Think big—it can be audio, visual, tactile—it can be a mural, a structure, a statue, an experience...
