Project Exchange
ACTIVITY: Reflection: Writng Artist's Statements
Project: "The Tempest" Video Project
SUMMARY
Goals
Details
Duration: 45 minutes
Assessments: Student writing
Description
After the completion of each major project (3-4 times per year) I have students write a 3-4 paragraph reflection on the piece they created. It is a bit different for each project, but it always asks students to reflect on the quality of the product they created, the process they went through to create it, and the learning that came out of the project for them. The Artist's Statement is an opportunity for students to reflect on their growth and to communicate anything to me about the project that they can't communicate in any other way. I usually give students about 30-40 minutes to complete it in class. Usually, if they are focused, they can complete it. If they are not, they take it home to finish it for homework.

REFLECTIONS & COMMENTS
Author Reflections
The first time I gave an artist's statement assignment, students groaned. By the second and third time, however, they expected it and they seemed to enjoy it. It is a nice opportunity to tell me what is going on in their group and in their head. Whenever I had time, I would read out some sections of high quality artist statements so that students knew what a quality reflection sounded like.
