Description

Note: The 'Do Now' for this day was influenced by an incident that occured in our community, was taken seriously by students and staff alike, and was addressed in a number of ways in a number of classes.

IN-CLASS:
1. Do Now: In your journals write your response to the hateful graffiti written in the men's restroom last week ('fuck a jew').
* Consider why someone in our community might have put up such a hurtful expression.
* Consider how it might make Jewish people in our community feel.
* Consider how this sentiment might relate to what happened during the Holocaust.
2. Write an 'Un-Hateful' Message that we can put on the wall.
3. Discuss "Humanity"
4. Dissect and Explore: "Naked and Barefoot, Hungry and Sleepy" Farewell Letters from Chaim Prinzental

HOMEWORK DUE NEXT CLASS:
Write a two page (minimum) letter back to Chaim in response to his letters. You may respond as his children (Jacob or Erna) or as yourself. Consider these questions as you write your letter:
* What would I have done in his situation?
* What is courage?
* What conditions might break my resolve?
* What are my values?
(NOTE: you will place this letter into an envelope and include this in your scrapbook!)
