Driving Question What's this?
How does slavery and civil war compare between America and a Spanish speaking country?
Upper Division students prepared for a talkshow exhibition about the experience of slavery and civil war through various viewpoints. Students were required to compare an aspect of slavery/civil war in America and in a Spanish-speaking country. For example, a student had to compare "life under slavery" in both America and Brazil.
This exhibition allowed students to become experts on various topics through completion of a research paper and allowed them to compare various viewpoints when working together to create a news broadcast/talkshow exhibition.
Students chose from a variety of topics and wrote research papers in order to become experts on those topics. Student topics ranged from "Slave Families" to "African Influence on Visual Arts" to "Military Strategy in Civil War".
As students had expertise on varying topics, when groups of students began to work in groups for their news broadcast, they were able to bring in a variety of viewpoints of in slavery and civil war. Thus, the student broadcasts brought comparative topics together. Students were required to shoot part of their talkshow in Spanish.
As a culminating assessment on the night of the exhibition, students were asked questions about the topics they researched by a panel of teachers and adults. In addition, audience members were encouraged to ask students questions after the panel questions were complete.
