Assessments: Student writing, Performance/presentation (i.e. speech, play), Research, Group work
Description
This project culminates in a multi-tiered assessment of a group production notebook and an individual performance. The objective of this project is for students to demonstrate that they deeply understand the literary elements (characters, theme, setting, plot, etc.), the language, and the historical significance of Shakespeare and Othello.
For the group component, students will create an original production notebook that shows their understanding of a specific act from Othello. The production notebook will contain all of the components that professional dramaturgy and production teams would include to ensure that the play was produced to appropriately convey the message of Shakespeare's play. These requirements include:
- Character Analysis
- Script Annotation
- Historical Research
- Contextualizing the Setting
For the individual component, students are responsible for two tasks:
(1) analyzing a character and
(2) memorizing and performing a 15-line (minimum) monologue to the class.

REFLECTIONS & COMMENTS
Author Reflections
There was a lot of "workshop" time given so that kids could work on what they needed to to get things accomplished. Seniors could handle and were productive in this type of environment. If I was using this assessment with younger students, I would be very clear about daily learning goals and products that were expected so that students would stay focused and efficient.
