These projects came together to produce an Exhibition Night: "A Scientific, Literary, and Artistic Exploration of Motion, the Physics of Change and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman," which synthesized and defended their recent studies. Students prepared Project Displays that included culminating work from Integrated Science, Visual Arts/Digital Media and English class. While responding to questions from guests during the Exhibition, students were expected to: 1. Provide a brief description and demonstration of the Rube Goldberg project. 2. Describe the art piece to the viewers and explain how it relates to: a. the motion of physics and/or b. events or characters in the novel. 3. Briefly explain what the story of Neverwhere is about and what happens in the novel. 4. Explain his/her Transactional Reading Journals, Storyboards and other artifacts from English Language Arts by describing what they are about & how they connect to the novel. 5. Provide at least 2 examples of an event in the Rube Goldberg Device that is similar to an event in the novel that shows Motion and the Physics of Change. Students were prepared to defend their work in response to the following questions: * What connections can you make between your Rube Goldberg device, the novel Neverwhere, and your Visual Arts/Digital Media work? How did your explorations in one class affect or influence the work you completed in other classes? * How do the Physics of Change that govern your Rube Goldberg device also relate to your understanding of the novel Neverwhere and the Storyboards you created? (Students should be able to make connections between events in their Rube Goldberg device and events in the novel). * Choose 1 or 2 concepts to ask about: In your Rube Goldberg Device, where are Newton's Three Laws, Kinetic or Potential Energy, Friction, Velocity or Acceleration demonstrated? * What do your Transactional Reading Journals show about your understanding of character, metaphor or theme in the novel? What creative ideas did you use to demonstrate these understandings? * What do you feel is the most important message explored in Neverwhere? What do you consider to be the most important events in the novel that show this to be true? Questions concerning the Visual Arts/Digital Media project: * Tell me about your scene, why did you pick this scene? What is significant about this scene? What is happening? Who is involved? What part of the book is it from? * What metaphorical physics are happening in this scene? Explain in detail. * How did you make your scene? Explain the process.
